Floral designed blazers. Impeccably tailored outfits. Patek Philippe timepieces catching the light. Art that commands presence. Philanthropy with intention. On paper, these worlds don’t always share a table, but at Pérez Art Museum Miami’s 13th anniversary of Art + Soul, they converged with ease, all in service of the PAMM Fund for Black Art.

Art + Soul is where Miami’s cultural stewards gather annually to affirm a simple truth: Black art isn’t a moment, it’s a mandate. The room hums with shared values, dressed in a beautiful spectrum of people who understand that collecting, supporting, and sustaining culture is an active practice.

This was my first Art + Soul, and while I expected a good night, I didn’t anticipate the collective frequency. From the moment you stepped in, the energy synced, laughter moving in waves, long embraces between friends who hadn’t crossed paths in too long, introductions sparking new alignments. DJ Aya held the night’s tempo with intention, threading sound through conversation like a steady pulse.

Then Deep Fried Funk took the stage, and the evening lifted. What followed felt less like a set and more like a shared release. The dance floor filled, movement became the language, and for a moment, dance itself was the art everyone agreed to collect.

My earliest memory of watching MTV centers on Yo! MTV Raps, hosted by Fab 5 Freddy, this year’s Art + Soul honoree. The weekend began Friday, February 6, with an intimate conversation between Fab and Franklin Sirmans, PAMM’s Sandra and Tony Tamer Director. It didn’t feel like a formal talk as much as two brothers catching up, stories unfolding with warmth, humor, and candor. The audience wasn’t just listening; we were invited into a living history of how art, media, and hip-hop braided together to shift culture.

For thirteen years, Franklin and the PAMM team have crafted an evening that does more than celebrate, it sustains. Art + Soul is proof that when care, resources, and community align, Black art receives the support it not only deserves, but demands, from a global audience that continues to grow more expansive and more aware.

I left Art + Soul with gratitude, and clarity. This wasn’t simply a celebration. It was a reminder that excellence thrives where culture is honored, time is given, and purpose is shared.
